I'm looking for a device that can be plugged in between a client computer and a switch and records all ethernet packets and puts it into a pcap file or similar in order to analyse it with wireshark.

I'm thinking of something like pwnie express or pwn plug that can possibly build by myself of purchased for a reasonable price.

In professional environments there are things like netoptics taps but those'd be too expensive.

Maybe there are existing projects you can recommend?

I'm reading this as if you're asking for product recommendations, which unfortunately isn't a very good fit for StackExchange sites. If you're asking, more generally, for passive network monitoring, then could you clarify that in your question? – Scott Pack Jun 21 '12 at 14:23
I'm confused as well. Are you asking for commercial products, or something to build? Do you need one, or many? What's the network environment? Why not run tcpdump or tshark on the client? – schroeder Jun 21 '12 at 14:49
This looks like a product recommendation, which is off-topic for SE. I vote to close. – Iszi Jun 21 '12 at 15:07

pwniee express details how to build your own and i believe the code is free for the basic version. If your trying to keep the hardware small which it sounds like you are, id suggest something like a pogoplug or one of the many other micro computers out there at the moment.
