I need a secure dsl modem. What I have found out over the last few months is that it is possible that a remote intruder, in lieu of being able to hack your computer itself, can gain control of the DSL modem and internet connection and somehow monitor your internet traffic from there.

Has anyone else experienced this? I have gone through several dsl modems and all have been subjected to some type of breach where there is some type of malware or trojan being installed on the memory and/or firmware on the modem. For a long time I thought it was the computer itself being hacked, and on some systems it has been, but recently it is just the dsl gateway device that is being compromised.

Installing dd-wrt on the wireless router seems to be able to secure at least that part of my network. dd-wrt however does not have support that I know of for any gateway modems so I still have to use a regular (vulnerable) dsl modem to get an internet connection.

So is there a dsl gateway available on the market that can at least be configured to be secure ?

I would think this would be a more commonly discussed issue since the modem itself is the first point of connection to the internet in any network, it would make sense to have a modem that has some more robust and configurable security features.
