IT Security Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for IT security professionals. It's 100% free, no registration required.

To be honest I struggled a little to find an appropriate exchange to put this question..!

I like to study 'hardware hacking' i.e. reverse engineering of both the hardware components and the firmware itself.

There's a great resource for this at http://www.devttys0.com/training/ who also have their own training course which looks great.

However, the cost of the course + the cost of travel makes it a really expensive option..

Does anyone know of any realms of study within the UK that I can tap into, in person? (I have tonnes of books :)

Just doing a course on electronics / electronic engineering would give you the basics. A bit like learning C lets you "reverse engineer" someone else's code. – John U Jan 8 at 14:56
If you gain another 4 reputation points (e.g. by writing an answer that gets an upvote), you can join us in chat to ask for recommendations. But I'm afraid that apart from saving on travel, you'll find that all such training is expensive — if you can, arrange for your employer to pay for it. – Gilles Jan 8 at 14:58
