I am putting together a security presentation, and I would like statistics on the occurrence of and damages from security breaches. Does anyone know of a reliable, recently-updated source?

See also security.stackexchange.com/q/12041/836 which asks for statistics that were particular to MITM attacks. –  Jeff Ferland Jan 13 '13 at 4:04

You'll probably find the Symantec threat report helpful: symantec.com/threatreport –  makerofthings7 Jan 13 '13 at 5:08

@makerofthings7 The Symantec report is clear, well-organized and didn't require me to register for anything. Thanks! –  Sean W. Jan 18 '13 at 21:02

I did a presentation on the exact same thing last year. I found Zone-H.org to be a good source.

http://datalossdb.org/statistics - truly opensource and not marketing-driven data.

The sources they get the data from (state governments) are open, but one must request permission to use their compiled data and charts. Too bat it's not under a Creative Commons license. –  Sean W. Jan 18 '13 at 19:46
