I am currently enrolling in a computer science class, however haven't learned about databases or security on the internet in general. I have had a lot of programming and database experience before going to university though. So I do know how to handle a database to the extent for it to work properly. My question now, is, how vulnerable would a MySQL database be to be hacked ? Or more specifically , what can happen to me in terms of hacking at all ? I think I would be very naive to believe that a strong database password would be all to ensure security.

The user will hardly be able to enter any text at all, so I guess SQL Injection will pretty much be out of the way as well...

I don't think I could possibly enumerate all of the issues with your question. The assumption that "not much user text will be entered" will give you any form of protection against SQL injection at all is highly misguided. – Polynomial Jan 13 at 12:04

Hi Martin - to answer this question, you really would need a book, and many books have been written on the subject :-) Have a good browse of existing questions here, and a read of the faq and if you have some specific questions, we can do our best with them. – Rory Alsop Jan 13 at 22:10

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. For help clarifying this question so that it can be reopened, see the FAQ.

Well, let me put it that way. Your question, transposed to the domain of medecine, would be: "I just enrolled in an anatomy class. I would like to perform neurosurgery, but I don't know much about it. I do have a nice hammer and a knife. The knife is not very sharp, so it should be fine, no ?"

To get what could happen to you, imagine that you are the patient of such a wannabe physician.

Haha nice analogy. I sort of knew that it is not easy as pie to create a social network, but I did not consider it that hard. – Martin E. Jan 13 at 19:26

With all these questions showing that you don't really have a clue where to start, I suggest hiring a few consultants.
