IT Security Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for IT security professionals. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am currently 21 years of age and I am very much interested in the world of IT and computers. More so in the section of network security. I am not so sure as to which paths I should take in terms of studies/work experience/etc...

What I have devised so far is to study a Networking Certificate at an IT college in South Africa (where I currently live), which will take 1 year to complete. I can then 'upgrade' the certificate to study for a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. During my spare time and holidays I would like to study for a Cisco certificate, namely just the CCNA. This plan will in all, take 4.5years to finish. By the end of the four and a half years, I will have three qualifications.

I am unsure if - from a professional's point of view - this will be a good plan as the certificate and the degree from CTI will be very very costly and I do not really have the finances for it.

May I please bother someone for a bit of advice on wha to do instead or afterwards if I have put together a good plan?

Thank you in advance Marcus
