I've been watching the Marble Hornets videos on YouTube (basically, an independent film series about a group of kids chased by the "Slender Man"), and in this video I saw something interesting. Normally, the videos have "Entry #" whatever as the title, but in this one (supposedly from the "bad guys", I guess), it's a repeating, glitching pattern of the following four series of characters:

I don't recognize this as any kind of encoding or cipher, so I was hoping the actual security experts might be able to enlighten me if there is one, or if it's actually just random nonsense. I'm always interested in learning something new from the pros!

The reasons I don't think it's random nonsense are:

  • The same four sequences are repeated; if it were random, I would expect lots of random strings.
  • It uses the same general alphabet (set of characters). (Actually, that just made me think -- maybe a simple substitution cipher?)
  • And, most importantly, the binary at the end of the "bad guy's video" is an actual binary representation of a string, not random nonsense. Translated into ASCII, the binary comes out to thetrees.

All of this makes me think that the data is indeed intentional rather than random noise.

The only thing I see in it is that each line has a set of brackets, a power of 10, and the letters for the word "RIGHT", combined with either a "T" or a "W". That's all I've got.
