I want to know if there are any limitations that are imposed on you when you enable home folder encryption in ubuntu.

Example, in the mac file vault, at least on Snow Leopard, time machine, and other back up / sync tools, have limited functionality (understandably so),

I want to know if there are any known limitations for ubuntu home folder encryption or if anybody has used both and can compare them,

I have been using file vault (Snow Leopard) for a few years and have no complaint what so ever. Performance is great (at least on my MacBookPro, using SSD).

is this is package vs package discussion, or the underlying technology / encryption? – david6 Nov 24 '11 at 8:31
This is mostly a user experience discussion, I want to know if people have had any negative experience (data loss, security/privacy problems, performance problems...) – Ali Nov 24 '11 at 12:31
I don't see what question there is to answer here. Yes, Ubuntu's home directory encryption works, they wouldn't offer it as a feature otherwise. Performance depends on your requirements and hardware capabilities (and if it's benchmarks you're after, I don't think this site is the right place). – Gilles Nov 24 '11 at 13:51
This is not a security question. If there is a specific security feature you are asking about, please clarify the question and if appropriate we can reopen. – Rory Alsop Nov 24 '11 at 14:51

@Ali I think the question would be more useful and answerable if you could outline the specific limitations you're concerned about. However, even then, this question probably belongs over on Super User. – Iszi Nov 28 '11 at 16:03
