I've heard that salt is not meant to be secret, but what if I made it secret? To put it simply; a salt protects against rainbow table attacks. You can make the salt public (it will be exposed at the end of hashes anyways); so if your passwords get dumped, the would be cracker has to use your salt on a dictionary of passwords to generate the hashes rather than an already pre-computed list of passwords (rainbow tables). |
