See e.g. Kerckhoffs's principle / Shannon's maxim. This question is too broad though, you're essentially asking what are good security practices that a start-up should follow no matter what. Start by implementing information security practices throughout your development process, hire knowledgeable professionals, then make sure they remain informed.
