comment Is GPG suitable as part of a password manager and generator?
Yea, I'm currently testing it, but I'm not sure if GPG encryption is more suitable than AES or Serpent...

Is it stronger than GPG? Also, a note about portability: Do not EVER decrypt your passwords on PCs that are not entirely yours. Reading the memory/keyboard/usb drive is very easy and one could steal your encrypted keys AND your key.

So, lets say I have a simple setup (bash script) that just encrypts my passwords in files and decrypts them. Should I use AES (maybe with many iterations) or GPG? Which is more secure?

@Stephane It's a password manager. I want to protect my passwords against reading while I'm offline (cracking the files I use to store my passwords). Also I want to protect against attacks while I transfer my password from the password manager to the application I want to use it (browser field) via a keylogger or something like that

@domen the key has to be exactly 256 bit. I use hashing to be able to use bigger passwords.

No, I use gpg with a 4k key to decrypt a random 256-bit key and then I hash it.

If I had an NFC I would do it. thought of it SO many times. not as pass manager, but as pam module for system authentication. but is NFC safe?

as you said we could use the symmetric part of GPG as-is (and not a variant)
