Client-side Javascript is a valid approach; generally speaking, users with JS disabled very, very few and far between. You could take it a step further and use the new HTML5 Constraint Validation API which will work without Javascript (simply adding required attributes to your inputs, and/or a regex in the pattern attribute is enough).
