comment what is the fastest and cheapest way to crack this kind of hash - md5(md5($password) + salt))?
I'm totally embarrassed by my answer now. Password cracking has come a long way in the past year and a half.

comment Contract requires me to work with sensitive IP, severe penalties for loss of data to 3rd parties. Some protection pointers please
Are you doing this, or is your company doing this? If you are doing this as a private individual, you really need to look into incorporation. Doing business as a corporate entity means that there is a wall between the company's assets, and your assets. You use a lot of words in your above post that make me think you are doing this as an individual.

Best Answer put in.. However, the 'some how' piece of the explanation does not seem plausible.

comment Does a Virtual Machine stop malware from doing harm?
The other piece to be aware of is the use of VMWare tools, which are a standard method of communicating back to the host, through the virtualized hardware. This is just another path, and one I don't know of any vulns for off the top of my head.

comment Is there a reason to disable root login, if SSH connections are restricted to a single IPv4 address?
When not running as root, the things you can do to permanently damage-disable-bork you system are much more limited in scope. I'm not saying it's THE protection mechanism, but it's a darn good start.
