Agreed, for the most part. What they do and what the bank wants you to think it does, are two different things. Most banks who show a security image do so after you enter a valid username, before final authentication. Some banks (i.e. one of mine) will show a random image if you enter an invalid username.

If I had a dollar for every time I've entered my smart phone's PIN incorrectly multiple times not really paying attention.... Though, if it wiped after 3 (instead of 10) times, I'd probably pay more attention.

Using the public ip doesn't tell if the port(s) are exposed externally, the firewall in many home routers treats internally sourced traffic differently. To be sure you are (or aren't) exposed publicly, it needs to be tested from outside your network.
