CIO/CTO of a financial institution in the mid-west. I lead product development for both in-house and customer experiences.

"Your competition is a hungry immigrant with a digital handheld assistant. America is made up of immigrants... if your children are to be successful they must act like immigrants in their own country. Just by being born here doesn't give you the ability to be successful... it is the work ethic... the pioneering ethic... the service ethic that will win. Your competition is always a hungry immigrant with a digital assistant: hungry in the belly for food, hungry in the mind for knowledge, and the hunger is something that should never leave you."

comment Has there been any documented cases where hackers have hijacked the phone number to a business?
Sounds feasible, but it's also feasible that the company bought numbers to use for future services and put them on forwarding and the average employee wouldn't know anything about them.

comment Security risks of leaving open a VPN connection
Say their physical workstation does become compromised and someone logs into the VPN. Given they are only allowed FTP access to a specific server and a specific folder on that server, and they are only allowed to upload new files and not write/overwrite, read, or delete.

comment Lots of bot hits, referer seems to be the variable
Agree with Owen. If it's programmed right (and to work as a good little worker bot should), once it sees the forbidden it would leave it alone. If it's a nefarious bot, it's looking for an open file or directory to gain access to. If you've got a CMS (Drupal, Wordpress, etc.), they would also attempt to crawl common module locations to find an in to your site.

Rory can you provide a link to what you read online? When i tried searching for HITECH in the HIPAA act on the federal website, it returned nothing for me.

comment How do I defend against known php hacks
Thanks again for the answer Jeff. We've been playing with Fail2Ban more and getting really strict with the rules that we have set, and we're blocking a lot more, but it seems as though it has increased in intensity. Are we pissing off the script kiddies?
