comment Is it possible to connect to a proxy with an ssl (or otherwise encrypted) connection?
Hmm.. So it works, but it's still pretty fiddly (stunnel doesn't really seem to be easy to set up). I'm surprised that there isn't an easier solution for this..

Well i don't neccesarily want to use multiple proxies, but i don't want to send all my traffic through the proxy (just a part of it). So i want to use my regular connection for most of my traffic, and divert some through the proxy.

Thanks, I'm having a bit of trouble finding out how to properly implement this though. It seems that chromium would be the way to go, but would then limit my use of a proxy to a single ssl proxy for all my connections (which isn't really optimal). Is there no easier way of doing this with say firefox and foxyproxy?

there is a ticket on the freenas 8 developers forum about including encryption on the 8.2 release (support.freenas.org/ticket/119), and using a hardware token at startup (and maybe on network access) of the nas. You could possibly use the yubikey for that.

That's a good solution! A yubikey sounds like the kind of solution i was looking for (small, crosscompatible, multiple ways of identification). And as for freenas, it is still under development, so there might be a solution in the future for using it with the yubikey. Thanks!

ok, but if i encrypt my entire disk (with my os on it), would that not mean i would have to enter my password before booting the os (which would mean i couldn't use an usb token)? Or are you suggesting i keep my important (encrypted) files separate from my main (unencrypted) os?
