Edited out SD card solution as it may be potentialy unsafe against future malware, capable of manipulating write protection.

Between archiving use a full size SD Card (say 128GB), flip it's switch to read only for everyday use and to read-write when you backup. This switch is not really a write protection. It's just a flag for the host system that it should not permit any write access. Therefore I would not rely on this in extreme cases like securing my sensitive data against malware.
