1. Does SIM card play any role in prevention of sniffing of traffic? If yes, how?

2. I just noticed in my mobile that there is an option of Network Selection Mode (defaultly set to Automatic). When I changed it to Manual, it has shown me list of Mobile Network Operators (like Airtel, Vodofone IN, Tata GSM, Tata Docomo, Cellone, Idea etc). This looks similar to Windows showing list of wifi networks (access points). Now with Wifi, we can connect to some networks only with password. So, I can only connect to Airtel Network because I've password (SIM) provided by Airtel. Am I right? Some how If I know password of other Network operator, I can connect to that other Network even though I've a different SIM. Right?

3. Is it possible to extract or spoof information on the SIM card?

4. I'm looking for good resources (Books) on this. I'm unable to tell you guys, what exactly I want to know because I myself am not sure. Let me try explain in the computer domain. When I want to know more about Computer communcation, pick up any good book on computer communication. It clearly explains things like: Then It explains what is the structure or packet that is exchanged between the two stations? It also explains the functions of each fields in the packet. With this much amount of information and understanding, as security enthusiasts we can think of how it can be exploited. But when I look at the mobile communication, I'm completely blank. I don't know what SIM card contains? I don't know what role it plays? I don't know the authentication procedure in a Network? I don't know how the call is initiated & terminated? What kind of communication/kind of messages exchanged? I don't know the format of SMS? I don't know anything. I can't search internet because, I don't know the right keywords for I'm looking for a BOOK which explains all these things to me.

NOTE: I'll offer extra bounty but please tell me what exactly I'm looking for and where can I find it?
