Nov 15, 2016 at 10:12 comment added David Scholefield ICMP based traceroute isn't the only option though - you can use TCP based traceroute (see 'tcptraceroute' for example) or UDP (which is how Microsoft's tracert works - though this needs inbound ICMP). You can also whitelist some external ICMP targets for network testing and management.
Jun 10, 2011 at 4:01 comment added D.W. good answer. However, I don't see it as much of a tradeoff: blocking ping probably brings at most a negligible security benefit. Of course, if you don't need it, go ahead and block it if you want (hey, whitelists are better than blacklists).
