My Web server's Logwatch report shows ssh and su activity that should not be there:

sshd:

      deployer -> root: 5 Time(s)

Users logging in through sshd:
   deployer:
      <SOME_IP_ADDRESS>: 45 times

But the server's ssh logs show no activity for <SOME_IP_ADDRESS> or this deployer user during the given day. This would lead me to believe that there is an intruder, who has erased all ssh log lines mentioning before quitting.

But Logwatch does not scan logs in real-time, but only once a day, which means it shouldn't have caught the above activity if the log lines were erased by the attacker.

  • Could Logwatch have reported nonsense?
  • What's the most probable situation here?
  • Is it definitely time to set up a new server?
  • How would you handle the situation?

It seems clear now, there definitely was an intrusion.

Can somebody see/explain how exactly this must have unfolded? (The User and Group names listed as "new" already existed before.)
