Does the CSR generated contains the SubjectAltName I have configured the openssl.cnf file to support extensions and when i dump the CSR i can see subject is available not the SubjectAltName

This is how CSR is generated:

As indicates by @StackzOfZtuff, the problem is you aren't telling openSSL to include SAN in your CSR.

A guide on doing so can be found here, and basically suggests doing:

You put that (and the appropriate req_distinguished_name information) into a req.conf file, then run openssl req -new -nodes -out myreq.csr -config req.conf.

The key aspects of making this work are:

  • openSSL uses the [req] section when generating a CSR
  • the [req] section provides some req_extensions, which include a SAN field.

You only need SAN in your CSR if your CA actually honours them, though - which AFAIK is not that common (but I may well not know much).
