Can one application access data of another application in some way because it has access to files on phone storage?

Can it make screenshots/log keystrokes without my knowledge?

Do such permissions exist?

How can I protect my phone from such things?

I think the only way: to use only trusted applications with good reputation from well known companies.

For example, if I use Google chrome and banking application on smartphone, can Chrome access banking app screen in some way?

  • I think you'll find all of these questions are easily answerable by deduction. 1. yes. You know the plethora of file managers available for android, which can access all user data. 2. there's screenshotting apps. That answers the question. 3. yes, see 1+2. Jun 20, 2017 at 12:05

@MarcusMüller: "which can access all user data" -- no, they cannot. They can access some data (specifically what is on external storage). Jun 20, 2017 at 12:13
  • But can it access application data or it is considered as special kind of storage (like differents users in mysql can access only their databases)?

No (in non rooted phones). Each application you granted permission to access file system will access to it's own data. It can't access to some other folder which is private to another specific application without your interaction.

Can it make screenshots/log keystrokes without my knowledge?

If you granted permission to work in background, they can.

Do such permissions exist?

Yes. Most of them exist. But not directly.

How?

You grant the permission to an app to overlay on another app. Then it may create a fake keyboard while you type. That is you are actually typing on the fake keyboard which is created by the app.

The app can record your keystrokes and also add it to the field which is focussed. So, you won't doubt it.

How can I protect my phone from such things?

Limit and review the background applications.

In latest versions, there is a privacy manager app in which you can set the permissions to allow or deny or ask every time, which is requested by the app.

I think the only way: to use only trusted applications with good reputation from well known companies.

Well. No.

  1. Facebook recently stated that they will access the user's smartphone/ computer camera to record your reactions while watching each post and then using some AI to give you the content based on your reaction. That is if you are in a funny mode, it will give you such posts and so on.

  2. Google now will record all your voice which you used in voice search for improving their application and the future search results.

  3. Google map will store all your location history you visited.

So don't trust app's from trusted companies.

Root kits / keyloggers do exist on Android. There are plenty of commercial viruses/rootkits that do. An example of this HackingTeam who has exploited several zero days and has written maleware that has the ability to rootkit your whole phone and track every app you use and your location and read your texts along with rootkits.

more info on this:

As for the Permissions.there is external read / write permissions. And probably other ones. Read these two articles by android.

Yara(a tool which many anti virus programs like ESET and CLAMAV US)which is used by pattern analysis on android that will search for Keylogger like signatures and priv exec. Any other tool besides yara for maleware anaylsis is pretty much garbage.

Note Some of the process are legitimate may have functionality to your keyboard. below are links to yara, and some rules that were written for detecting android male-ware:
