Over the last few years many online portals, email and social networks have linked user accounts with mobile numbers that can be used for account recovery, this way was pretty cool and secure as well.

In many cases when someone move to new country they will lose access to their old mobile number and will not remember change the linked phone number until they need to recover the account, but at this stage that will be too late as they will no longer have access to the account.

My question is, in this scenario how is possible to recover the account when you have no access to the phone number and there is no other recover mechanism such as a linked email?

  • What site has no other recover mechanism such an email though? – TheJulyPlot Jul 13 '17 at 6:45
  • Most the sites have but it is optional – Mr.lock Jul 13 '17 at 6:53

In this kind of case, contacting the support of the company would be the only option left. A support staff will be able to escalate it to support engineers that will manually reset your account for you, or update your mobile phone number to the present one so you can complete the recovery steps.

I would hope that no company would make it that easy to hijack an account. – Chenmunka Jul 13 '17 at 8:21
  • how do you mean? – Avison Jul 13 '17 at 9:36

If all you had to do was phone up a support person and ask to be let into an account, then there is no security whatsoever. – Chenmunka Jul 13 '17 at 9:43
  • So then answer him with the appropriate answer... – Avison Jul 13 '17 at 14:08
  • That it's silly doesn't make it false. Most exploits are found between the keyboard and chair. I'd presume big name social media won't fall for simple ones, but I've never tried it. – user123931 Jul 13 '17 at 16:03
