This is because the string you get from base64 decoding is still encrypted (and compressed), and requires a password being supplied from the outside to be successfully decrypted.

The decrypting routine, once slightly deobfuscated, goes something like this:

$alpha=md5($alpha).substr(md5(strrev($alpha)),0,strlen($alpha));

for ($i=0;$i<15324;$i++) {
    $crypto[$i]=chr((ord($crypto[$i])-ord($alpha[$i]))%256);
    $alpha .= $crypto[$i];
}
$crypto = gzinflate($crypto);
// Executes $crypto in a created function.

The password is 'root', and the decoded routine starts by making its environment friendlier:

  • Thanks! I was just looking at that section and figured it was at the least compressed due to the gzinflate. I see the md5 calls. Trying to fake it with a pwd to see if I can print out the intent.
