I'm using the Win32 port of OpenSSL from Shining Light Productions to operate a small personal CA, and I'm running into a weird problem. These are the commands I use to generate a client key/certificate pair:

openssl genrsa -out client.key.pem 2048
openssl req -new -sha256 -key client.key.pem -subj /C=US/ST=CA/L=Mytown/O=Myorg/CN=Myname -out client.csr
openssl ca -batch -in client.csr -out client.cert.pem -days 180 -md sha256 -config \openssl.cnf

Output from openssl req -in client.csr -noout -text contains the following:

Certificate Request:

Note that the location is present. Output from openssl x509 -in client.cert.pem -noout -text contains the following:

The location is not present there, or is not showing.

While this isn't a show stopper: the certificates work correctly, it's still a concern. If there's some error in my commands that is causing this, there may be other errors that might be more serious.

First, note that the CA does not just take the CSR and issues a certificate with all the information in the CSR. Instead it takes only selected information from the CSR to create a new certificate. The details of this process with openssl ca is defined by the [ca] section in the configuration.

This section describes how the various parts of the subject for the new certificate are created. It essentially says here that the commonName is taken from the CSR. It says nothing about localityName so no location ends up in the certificates subject.
