I do not understand why they need asymmetric key encryption, if the client does not use the public key. As far as I understand it, the user password is used to decrypt the private key and no public key transfer is used. So public and private key are stored at the server.

Could they use symmetric key encryption to encrypt the file key with the user password too, or did I miss something?
