So if there is a service which has executable path as below.

Path to executable : C:\PROGRA~1\ABCSOFT~\service.exe

Here the path is shortened using "8.3 filename" convention and the actual complete path to executable is : C:\Program Files\ABC Softieee\service.exe

Now I tried to put "C:\Program.exe" file and restarted the service but it did not execute the "Program.exe". So the question is :

Why "C:\Program.exe" is not executed ? How Windows handles short filenames in Service Paths?

  • Windows handles short file names correctly, so you can run "C:\PROGRA~1\ABCSOFT~\service.exe" just fine. You do not provide sufficient information to determine why your program is not working. It may have path-based dependencies for example. – Overmind Nov 22 '19 at 11:31
