I am putting together a security presentation, and I would like statistics on the occurrence of and damages from security breaches. Does anyone know of a reliable, recently-updated source?

Likely helpful:

Verizon's Data Breach Investigations Reports
Trustwave's Global Security Reports
Mandiant's M-Trends

http://datalossdb.org/statistics - truly opensource and not marketing-driven data.

  • The sources they get the data from (state governments) are open, but one must request permission to use their compiled data and charts. Too bat it's not under a Creative Commons license.

I'll add to this as I check for relevancy.

I did a presentation on the exact same thing last year. I found Zone-H.org to be a good source.
