Can software passwords can be bypassed by REVERSE-ENGINEERING?

Maybe it's easy question for you.. but I need a bit technical understanding of this..

Let's say, when software XYZ is installed in OS and executed, that means, there is communication between OS and XYZ and OS executes and sees everything that XYZ commands.

Here is my perception of passwords (like .zip passwords):

Is it possible to alter software logic, to execute the command, instead of another command?
