How is my Mac bookMacbook connecting to my phone's hotspotWiFi APs without asking for a password?

first of all, apologies if this is not the right forum.

When I work away from home (and home wifi) I use my phone's hotspot to connect my mac bookMacbook to the internet. However, it's always surprised me that I just have to click on the name of the hotspot to connect. It never asks for a password, not even the first time, and it also happens with different phones. The wifi list shows phone hotspots with a different icon, which makes me think the "protocol" used is different. In any case, it makes me a little uncomfortable that it's just a click away. I'm assuming that the the mac bookMacbook is not brute-forcing the password 😅 Also.

Also, if I do this in a public space, could someone with a mac bookMacbook (I'm assuming this only happens with macMac computers) also join my phone's hotspot just like that?

Could someone explain what's happening or point me to documentation about it?

Thanks!
